 A differenza di
Antonio Margheriti, Freda e Bava, per il loro esordio nella fantascienza, preferiscono tematiche vicine all'horror e al
mistero, e, pur rinunciando alle avventure 

interstellari, realizzano una pellicola originale e interessante.
Il soggetto sviluppa lo spunto della misteriosa scomparsa della civiltà Maya sull'ipotesi della caduta, nel 607 d.C.,
di un 

corpo celeste radioattivo. La premessa serve agli sceneggiatori per dare credibilità alla presenza
del fagocitante organismo unicellulare e per spiegare l'orrenda metamorfosi di Gunther. 

Lineare nello
svolgimento, teso nel gioco di luci ed inquadrature e vicino ad evocare atmosfere lovecraftiane, il film soffre,
tuttavia, della pochezza di mezzi per effetti speciali. I 

carri armati che alla fine risolvono la faccenda
sono visibilmente dei modellini giocattolo e il mostro informe altro non è che comunissima trippa per macelleria.
Caltiki è firmato da Riccardo Freda sotto lo pseudonimo di John Hampton, ma, per ammissione del regista stesso,
reca la riconoscibile impronta di Mario Bava, ufficialmente "soltanto" 

direttore della fotografia e degli
effetti speciali.

Giunta in Messico per
indagare sulla scomparsa dei Maya, la spedizione scientifica del dottor John Filding scopre in un lago sotterraneo, che
emana forte radioattività, una mostruosa forma 

di vita posta a guardia di Caltiki un idolo millenario. La
creatura ferisce un uomo, Gunther, innescando nel suo organismo un rapido e irreversibile processo di mutazione. In
preda ad una 

follia omicida, Gunther fugge dall'ospedale nel quale era stato ricoverato, proprio nel momento
in cui il dottor Rodriguez ha fatto una scoperta strabiliante: la radioattività va collegata 

al passaggio
di una cometa che dopo millenni sta per attraversare nuovamente i cieli della Terra....................

Archaeologists investigating some Mayan ruins come across
a blob-like monster. They manage to destroy it with fire, but keep a sample. Meanwhile, a comet is due to pass close to
the Earth - 

the same comet passed near the Earth at the time the Mayan civilization mysteriously collapsed.
